73% of Charity fund requests fail to show EINs

EIN plate 12-3456789Employer identification numbers (EINs) are key to identifying charities and avoiding “charity” scams. Unlike individual Social Security Numbers, charity EINs are public information.

We urge every legitimate charity to help donors and prominently display the charity’s EINs.

Over the last few months, we’ve conducted an online poll about whether charities are showing their EINs in their donation requests. Here are the final results:

  • EIN prominently shown: 18.3%
  • EIN shown, not prominently: 8.5%
  • EIN not shown: 73.2%

You can help. Next time you mail in a donation to a favorite charity, send along a copy of our short paper insert encouraging the charity to prominently show its EIN in its outreach and fundraising materials.  Go ahead, print it out now - there are four copies per sheet. Keep a supply with your checkbook.

Short insert EINs

We plan to keep at this, and look forward (with your help) to the poll results showing much higher display of EINs in the future.
