64.3 million Americans volunteered about 7.9 billion hours for local and national organizations in 2011, according to the latest numbers from VolunteeringinAmerica.gov.
- They served their communities and the world through charities and other nonprofits, government agencies and other community groups.
- They worked for civic, educational, hospital, religious, social service, sports, arts and other programs.
- And the value of their service was almost $171 billion.
That $171 billion of volunteer service is on top of the $250 billion+ donated by individuals to charities. Individuals, as volunteers and donors, are crucial to charity and community success.
